Noticing my approach, Drake stood. “Hey, Constance! Glad you came.”

“I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.”

We were still smiling at each other when a tall, shapely redhead popped up out of nowhere and grabbed Amos’s arm. He made the introductions, “Constance, this is my friend, Mary.” We went through the usual ritual and shook hands.

Drake leaped aboard his father’s thirty-five-foot fishing trawler. “Keep everything up top,” he warned as the rest of us followed.

“Yeah, we gotta at least act like we’re fishin’,” Jeremy claimed, baiting a pole before laying it aside and ignoring it.

“Look at those dopes.” Sheila laughed and pointed at the series of boats overcrowded with vacationers going out, hoping to catch something big enough to brag about and photograph.

After cracking open a cold Pepsi for me, Drake used his spare key and started the motor, then cautiously backed the boat away from the pier.

“Did your Dad get any witness reports from the ship survivors?” Amos asked Drake, relaxing on one of the plush seats.

“Just wild stuff. Dad said most of the survivors were so shaken up they were incoherent. All talking at the same time. Crying and pointing into the water…crazy!”

I gulped. If they only knew the truth about the shipwreck and the host of sea creatures seen that night. Lucky for my family it was too dark for the terrified crew members to see clearly. But I knew the survivors had lived through something so horrific they would never forget it.

While his friends laughed about the shipwreck, Drake noticed the high waves advancing. Looking toward the skies, he saw no signs of a storm. “I wonder why the lake is so choppy? The weather station swore clear skies and smooth sailing.”

I knew what was going on. Mermaids were in the waters, hunting.
