When the power pulls you in - dominant males and their animal attraction #shifter #PNR

animal magnetism
  1.        the power to attract others through one's physical presence, bearing, energy, etc.
  2.        the indefinite power, presumably innate in some persons, that enables one to induce hypnosis.

We don't talk outright about personal magnetism or animal magnetism in the romance world, but what we are writing does have elements of that. Especially with vampires and shifters.

With vampires, it's not so much animal magnetic power, but personal hypnotic power. They use their power to put their victims in thrall.

thrall
noun
  1. Also called thraldom, (US) thralldom. the state or condition of being in the power of another person
  2. a person who is in such a state
  3. a person totally subject to some need, desire, appetite, etc

verb
4. (transitive) to enslave or dominate

But with werewolves, we ARE talking about animal magnetism, not so much the ability to induce hypnosis, but for sure the power to attract and hold attention, the ability to exude power and dominance, and an enhanced physical presence.

I think a lot of their power comes from an enhanced physical presence sourced from their wolf or their bear or their other internal animal. The wild part of them that refuses to be tamed yet calls to us with all the beauty of a perfect storm.

And in my ongoing shifter story in Sexy to Go, this power emerges in several ways. It's sexually attractive - almost an aphrodisiac - as well as dominating and confident. In the latest installment, one new ability has made itself known, namely, that a VERY dominant male's power can pull a female into labor. In this case, two females, who enter labor. One, upon his arrival (though she hasn't laid eyes on him yet) and the other, once she is in direct line of sight.

Here's an excerpt from the story, called Mate me or Hate me:

Dahlia placed an arm across her shoulders. “Don’t worry, Snake’s not going to let anything happen to you – or the baby. Nor is Liam and he has the entire bear pack to back him up. Believe me, nobody is going to get to this baby but us.”
Swallowing, she lifted her head. “Okay. Fine. But when we get there, remind me why I’m not living in another country sipping coffee in a sidewalk cafe instead of hunkered down in some tiny remote cabin surrounded by bears watching my mind go stir crazy?”
“Deal.” Dahlia took her hand and pulled.
Casi came off the bed and paused, one hand automatically going to her belly. “Wait. I feel funny.”
“What is it?”
“I think… It’s …” One strong cramp hit her and she cried out, then liquid trickled down her legs. “Oh, damn. I think my water broke.” Gasping, she looked up at Dahlia, searching for support.
Dahlia produced a phone she’d had hidden somewhere on her body and dialed. “Liam? It’s time. We need to get Casi to the hospital right now.” Ample swearing could be heard on the other end, and Snake’s concerned voice, too. “Okay. We will meet you here.” She snapped the phone shut and turned to Casi. “Do you have a bag already packed? What about a robe?”
Casi pointed to the robe on the end of the bed and her bag, sitting on the chair next to the dining table. Dahlia wrapped her in the robe, grabbed the bag and started them toward the door.
When Casi put her hand on the doorknob, her body flushed hot. A thousand prickles tingled over her skin, precursors of something bigger, but she didn’t know what. It felt almost as if … almost … Oh, God. Was she going to shift? But I can’t do that. The baby. Demanding her body remain in human form, she stubbornly opened the door.
Behind her, Dahlia let out a sharp cry. Casi’s senses picked up her distress, the cramp that ran through her mate was the same as hers a moment ago. Then, she scented the additional liquid. Dahlia had just entered labor, too. But how, or why? Stunned, Casi focused her attention on the figure in front of the door. A large man silhouetted against the bright sunlight, his face nearly in shadow. But from what she could see of it, he looked familiar. As if she’d known him long ago… Suddenly the details snapped into place. She could hardly find breath to say the words that burned through her throat on the way out.

“Hello, dad.”

Suffice to say, the super-dominant masculine exudes a force on the female body that cannot be denied. And that's probably WHY females love them so much! :)

About Tianna Xander

Sometime in the fall of 2000, after hearing that I loved reading historical romances a co-worker thrust a paper grocery bag full of books on me. For the most part, the books were what I loved to read, historical, mainly regency romances. However, hidden deep within this newfound treasure of books, I found a book of a type that I had never read.

The avid historical romance reader in me shuddered to find a vampire novel hidden deep in the bottom of that bag. Still, my husband was a sailor and out to sea. After reading the historical, I was bored. To me, an avid reader of almost everything, reading a vampire novel for the first time was infinitely better than reading an historical novel a second time.

Gingerly, I picked up the vampire novel and with very low expectations—boy I was a snob, wasn’t I?—I began to read. I stopped after the first chapter. It wasn’t because I didn’t like it. It was because the book was so good, so well written and quite in the middle of a series. Anyone who knows me and my reading habits, knows that I never start reading a series in the middle. I put down book four of the series and immediately went out to find books one through three and any others she may have written after book four.

After a year or so of reading every paranormal book I could get my hands on, I complained to my husband that my favorite authors didn’t write fast enough.

He said, “You’ve been wanting to write a book of your own for some time. Why don’t you give it a try while you wait?”

“Why not?” I replied and I immediately got to work. It should be easy, I thought. It wasn’t as though I hadn’t taken college English and vocabulary. This would be a piece of cake, right?

Wrong!

After countless writes and rewrites and close to a hundred rejections from agents and publishers alike, I almost gave up. Again my husband stepped up. “Darlin’,” he said, wrapping his arm around me and kissing my forehead. “You write all of the time. You write during your breaks at work, you write at breakfast, you write in bed… What will you do if you stop writing? You can’t stop writing. You love it too much.”

That made me think. I do love to write. I adore spinning tales that others read and touching people in some small way with whatever emotions are packed in my books. As much as I hate to admit it, he was right.

Not too long after that, a woman who I have come to realize is as beautiful inside as she is outside, offered me a contract for Virgin’s Blood.

The rest is, as they say, history. Now, after over eighty published stories later, I’m still writing and still hoping that I touch at least some of my readers the way my favorite authors have touched me. It’s my goal to make my readers laugh, cry and maybe hate a character or two before they see the character’s redeeming qualities. If I’ve made even one reader feel strongly about any one of my characters, I think I’ve done my job as a storyteller.

Pulling my readers into my stories is what I strive to do every time I write a new book. If I succeed in pulling readers into my fantasy worlds in some small way, then I’m happy in a job well done.

Welcome to the Paranormal Love Features page!

By Debbie Christiana

As a writer and an avid reader, the setting of a story is important. In a romance you might choose a beach at sunset or a picnic in front of a crackling fire. A haunted mansion, cemeteries, insane asylums are great spots for a darker story.

But what if the setting was an unusual place? A place seldom visited by star crossed lovers or the shifter/vampire couple.

One the best short stories I ever read (In a writing class I was taking about writing villains, description and setting) was an untitled paranormal romance submitted to class by a woman. The reason was the uncommon location of vampire’s liar.

The NEON MUESUM of Las Vegas.

The writer lived in Las Vegas and this very real place was common knowledge to her, but not to the rest of us, which made it so much more creepy and fun!

I remember the vamp wooing his lover behind the Wedding Chapel sign...

And taking care of some unpleasant business near the old and battered Golden Nugget sign Mafia style.

I was so impressed with the story, her vivid descriptions of the old 'graveyard' from the heated neon brightness to the sounds of Las Vegas nightlife in the background, that a year later when my husband I went to Las Vegas, I looked it up.

You can visit, but the hours are limited. It’s a guided tour because it can be dangerous to walk around there alone. Unfortunately, we went in July when it was 110 in the shade and the museum had shorter hours in the heat of summer, so it didn’t fit into our schedule. But next time!

Is there a story you’ve read that stuck with you because it took place somewhere different and exciting?

I write paranormal romance and short dark fiction. TWIN FLAMES a PNR about reincarnation, soul mates and…a ghost, is set in a vineyard in northwest Connecticut, where I live. Not all that unusual, but today (FEB 21) is the last day it's on sale for $0.99 on Amazon at  http://amzn.to/1wNciLW

Happy Reading and Writing!

Paranormal Fascination

Why the fascination with Paranormal Romance?

Long before Bram Stoker's Dracula, there were legends and myths of vampires and other supernatural creatures. Humans have been fascinated with what is unusual and unique.

Paranormal Romance gives escapism from the every day life. And the heroes are pretty hot too.

I think because of the freedom it gives both readers and writers. Also, it correlates feelings of not fitting in with finding a soul mate. A vampire, shifter, or angel won't fit in with normal society--at least not completely.

There is the romance and the unusual that draws me into reading and writing paranormal romance.
My hero or heroine can be a dragon shifter or an Incubus - and have problems both common to humans and not.

It's the paranormal aspect wrapped up in a character(s) that breaths freshness into a story or romance. And I for one, can't get enough.

Son of Dragons Book 2 Legends of Oblivion
9781440581267Blurb: Shunned by her own people and weary-hearted from centuries of lost loves, Elvin warrior Mirhana scours the land to silence the undead. Her heart has turned as cold as the sword she wields, until a prince seeks her aid.

Never has Prince Landon met a woman like Mirhana. Both beautiful and deadly, she haunts his dreams. The battle at hand becomes more enchanting than fighting to remain true to his unseen betrothed.

When a traitor emerges, new alliances are tested and the only remaining hope is to follow the prophecy and find the . . . Son of Dragons.

Excerpt:Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about those piercing emerald eyes. They’d belonged to a woman; he could tell. There was intelligence and cunning in them. Her stare felt as though she saw through the façade he often wore as prince and to please others, and into his kajh. A woman who was not afraid, but used to being feared. It unnerved him, yet excited him. Better get some sleep before the night was gone. Tomorrow, he’d tell Gillespie about what he saw. He doubted he could explain those captivating green eyes that continued to haunt him even now.

Bio Pic 300x400Andrea R. Cooper's favorite childhood memories revolved around creating vibrant characters for her friends, and then acting out their adventures. Inside her fantasy worlds of darkened forests, dragon-filled glades, and iced islands, nothing was banned. From the ethereal Elvin to the most maligned Vampires, all were welcome in her fictional realities, a stark contrast to her home, where the magical and mythical was forbidden.

Divorced and disillusioned of love and believing all the love songs and books exaggerated, she put aside her creativity for life. Many years past before characters, from the familiar to the freshly conceived, came to her again, but this time teasing at a new passion, the written word.

Gradually, her real life hero brought love and magic back into existence. During the time when her characters were getting reacquainted, the love of her life was showing her that true love never gives up and rekindles no matter how many times others attempt to extinguish it. Today, she is happily married with three children.

Andrea believes in the power of change and delighting in each moment. But most fervently, she believes in the magic of love and imagination again.
